The difference here is that one forgets the details of most of this film’s extravagance the minute one walks out of the cinema, which makes the visual effects seem less about storytelling, and more about window dressing. This makes The Crimes of Grindelwald even more exhausting to watch than Beauty and the Beast (2017), from whose proliferation of CG gilding I took three days to recover. The Crimes of Grindelwald, however, takes no such care with its own story and seizes every opportunity to bombard the audience with shiny, over-the-top CGI in the hope of distracting us from the fact that we have no idea what’s going on. The film also succeeds at the other end of the spectrum by using flashbacks and Leta Lestrange’s story to subtly demonstrate the terror of seemingly innocent things.Īll is not quite well, however, because one of the things that made Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them so exceptional was the perfect equilibrium between the subtle and the spectacular. The Crimes of Grindelwald is replete with stunning images that make the eye sigh with contentment, and Grindelwald’s passion for the dramatic ensures striking visuals that are both frightening and beautiful. In displaying Grindelwald’s ability to soothe as well as shock, this last scene is a mesmerising showcase of the manipulative prowess that makes the man such an alarming threat to civilisation at large. I will say no more.ĭespite all of this confusion, The Crimes of Grindelwald more than redeems itself in terms of three absolutely exquisite scenes that make the whole film worth the wait: a scene involving Tina that I will not elaborate on, the stunning opening sequence, and Grindelwald’s speech in the amphitheatre. She also seems to be writing Fantastic Beasts as some bizarre Star Wars AU. An example of this is Rowling’s re-use of some of the most prominent but least interesting Harry Potter tropes and plotlines, without displaying David Eddings-like brilliance in explaining why this repetition is taking place.

The plot mishap leaves The Crimes of Grindelwald with a great big crack down its middle that spreads steadily outwards and threatens to take the whole film down with it.
What’s worse is that Rowling seems to be aware of this, and therefore condemns her characters to spend long minutes standing around explaining it to us, thus compromising both realism and pacing.
The whole thing is so hopelessly disjointed and cobbled together that even the most attentive audience member spends most of their time wondering what just happened and why. Rowling’s attempt to reconcile these two storylines ensures that the plot more closely resembles the Gordian Knot than an actual, understandable sequence of events. It was always a tall order, and is one that The Crimes of Grindelwald regrettably fails to live up to. Plot.Īs we know from the profuse number of trailers released for this film, Fantastic Beasts 2 has two major plotlines that somehow need to come together: Newt Scamander in Paris hunting Grindelwald, and the other characters and creatures from Fantastic Beasts doing…something… that somehow ties into this. Our apprehension doesn’t stop Newt from travelling to Paris at the instigation of Albus Dumbledore to undertake an incredibly dangerous mission that will involve numerous entanglements with persons both savoury and unsavoury. It is one of the most thrilling opening sequences of the year, and masterfully sets up Grindelwald as a devastatingly intelligent, cold-blooded psychopath that we do not want to see anywhere near our favourite cinnamon roll. As was made clear in the trailers, The Crimes of Grindelwald opens on a rather more sobering note, with the escape of Gellert Grindelwald from MACUSA custody.

The original Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them left Newt and Tina full of hope for the future, Queenie heartbroken at Jacob’s being obliviated and Jacob happily making Niffler-shaped pastries in a bakery financed by Occamy eggshells.
